Damn those clever Hollywood Bastards! This movie is a clear example of how well they know their business. Watch the trailer - just watch it! Now, let me tell you, the movie is a hundred times better than you could ever expect from it.
It’s sad, on one hand, how the trailer leads the viwer to almost reduce this beautiful story to just mere romance. I saw the promo and almost instantaneously thought of Nicholas Sparks’s cheesy love stories where you end up crying because somebody dies. And I’m not saying that About Time is not romantic or you won’t get your eyes watering… All I’m saying that there is so much more to this movie than mere romance.
Surprisingly enough, I think it’s kind of philosophical. You couldn’t see it without at least a little bit more appreciation of life and the very short time you get to live it. The movie is much more about life and family and the mistakes that we make and the second chances that we may not deserve sometimes but we, nevertheless, get, and about the people who are willing to give us those second chances. It’s about trying to find yourself and making yourself become the best version of you that you can be. It’s about being better and trying harder. It’s about learning from your mistakes. It’s about appreciating the important people in your life and remembering why they’re so important.
You see? It’s so much more than just love… although love is in the roots of it. And it’s not just romantic love - it’s family love as well. And love for the friends we don’t always understand why we love so much…
The casting of the movie is just fantastic. Rachel McAdams seems to fit perfectly in all sorts of roles - from the shallow Regina in Mean Girls all the way to our lovely Mary. I was truly impressed with the direction and how simplistic everything was. Time traveling could have fooled many directors into venturing in the world of superheros and comic books, but not Richard Curtis who really managed to put the emphasis on the most important points of the film. No overdoing it!
Hmmm… I really didn’t expect to like About Time as much as I actually did.
