I absolutely adore this movie! When studying about the French revolution many people focus too much on the ordinary person (who indeed plays an enormous role in the Revolution) but do not concentrate this much of their attention on the reigners by simply assuming that they are the bad guys in the story. Marie Antoinette (the moive) gives the other side of the story and portrays the main character (Marie Antoinette) in a very different light than what we’re used to. She’s not the vicious, selfish, spoilt little girl who settles in Versailles and does not care about the people of France… or pretty much anything but her hairdo. She’s young, she’s loving, and she’s choiceless. She has no control over her faith, as everything has been decided for her - her marriage, her home, her friends. So she’s just trying to find her way to live this pre-destined life and live it happily.
The movie is very light and pretty. It may not present the historic events as they have really occurred, but it puts a beautiful veil over the ugly and bloody truth of the French revolution, and it ends at the Revolution’s very beginning saving the viewer the tragic of what follows.
I think it’s worth watching Marie Antoinette not so much in hope of learning about the French revolution, but more to get into the atmosphere of the time, which is really interesting and unique.
