Somewhere I’ve read a theory which said that creativity is taking something old, something classic, something we’re familiar with, and giving it a new edge. Well, I guess there’s no better example of this theory than this movie. Indeed, while watching it, we should probably recall the fairy tale from our childhood, just so we can compare and distinguish the two stories from each other. I like it how the original story, where the father is convinced by the stepmother to take the children to the woods and leave them there and which stays as a base for the movie, is changed a little bit, but the most essential part - that of the mother-daughter bond which is broken by the evil witch - remains. Rereading Hansel and Gretel really gives us the perspective that even in the manly society where the two characters live and where the story takes place, the main figure is, however, the girl - Gretel. She is in the heart of the fairy tale and she is the key component of the blach witches’ spell in the movie.
Another good point is creating those witches’ societies and hierarchy which come to resemble our own real societies where there is a power figure who rules and who has special privileges over the others, there are the obedient servants, and there are the rebels who, ironically, almost every time become the heroes of the story. Also, the mayor-sheriff relationship is quite revealing as to how politics works nowadays, and I tend to think that it is an indirect reproach to it.
In the fairy tale there is some serious symbology going on which was rather omitted or replaced in the movie, and despite the fact that I tend to look for such ‘errors’, in this case I really think it can be rather overlooked because the centre of attention has not so much been lost, as it has been moved.
The movie is good, and the only thing that I didn’t personally like was the cursing. There was just too much of it. I think this made the film a bit less realistic, as in the times when the action takes place the society was much more conservative, and I don’t think that it was rather accepted for a young fair girl to swear all the time. But this is my personal opinion on the matter.
All in all, the movie is good, it gives another perspective of the classic story, and it is entertaining. There isn’t as much meaning and symbology as there is in the fairy tale, but it definitely proves that bed-time stories can be enjoyed not only by toddlers.
