Movie Review: The Bling Ring (2011)

In the middle of July 2013 you can guess that I was actually looking for the 2013 Sofia Coppola’s Bling Ring, and I absolutely accidentally stumbled upon this movie only to discover that the internet has some hidden tresures. I have to admit that I enjoyed this film so much that I had almost no idea that this was not the movie I thought it was - only after it had ended and I wondered where the hell was Emma Watson did I notice the year of production. Funny enough, the whole time I was 100% sure I was watching a movie made by Sofia Coppola (and that’s provided that she’s one of my favourite directors).

I thought the movie was flawless. The script was well-written, the story was interesting, and the acting was fairly good. The best thing, however, I think was the directing. It was just so smart and witty. I usually don’t like watching films about spoilt brats who can’t think of a legal way to entertain themselves, but this movies was so much more. At some points I felt almost like I was watching a reality show, like all of this was true, and I was given an exclusive inside look on the whole story. I loved the change in perceptions, how different characters got to speak and tell their opinion about what’s happened, and this whole time changing from present to past to present and so on with the interviews was very interesting and it kept me waiting for what was going to happen next.

I also liked the simplicity of the film. Now, when I say that I’m grading visual and sound effects that in no way means that only fast-and-furious sort of movies can get an excellent mark in these categories. To achieve an effect without using too much the help of a computer and of the latest technologies is actually quite more difficult. This film was simple, it was realistic and down on the ground (for the most part), and keeping it anything but simplistic would have been just over the top. 

I think, all in all, the 2011 Bling Ring is an amazing movie. It’s enjoyable, it’s fresh, and it’s definitely worth watching.
